The Family Literacy Project Team

The driving force behind the success of the project is the team, comprising the director, five coordinators, 9 facilitators, 4 Teachers in Training, Reading Experts and 7 library assistants.  They meet regularly at the resource centre in Underberg to plan and review their work, share concerns and celebrate achievements.   FLP works with part time specialists in health, libraries, and monitoring and evaluation who bring in additional skills when needed.

Facilitators work in the area in which they live and take part in an ongoing staff development programme that includes training in adult literacy, early literacy, psychosocial support, hc-IMCI, and library management.   This past year with Pepfar funding, the team had intensive training in counselling those suffering with HIV and AIDS. This deepened their reach into the community in profound ways.

Three of our coordinators are women who joined as facilitators in 2000 and have each developed a special interest, for example early childhood development, health/food garden promotion, library support and adult literacy.  They visit facilitators’ sites to provide support and monitor progress.
