Asifunde Sonke – Let Us Learn Together
Welcome to Asifunde Sonke, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Teacher Training Project dedicated to transforming the educational landscape in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Established to address the pressing need for qualified educators in the many creches and preschools in this region, our training is conducted at the esteemed Noah’s Ark Pre-Primary School in Himeville.
Our mission is rooted in a vision of inspiration, dedication, and collaborative effort, bringing together passionate individuals and organizations committed to making a difference. At Asifunde Sonke, we believe in the power of education to shape futures and uplift communities.

Comprehensive Training and Support
Asifunde Sonke offers a nationally certified, 2-year South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) Level 5 accredited ECD teacher training course. Our flexible schedule, with classes held on Saturdays and during school holidays, allows students to continue working in their current roles and support their families. This approach ensures that our students can maintain their family commitments while pursuing their educational goals
Reading Champion Training
A key component of the programme is the training and development of Reading Champions — previously unemployed youth between the ages of 18–35 from within local communities.
Through this training, Reading Champions:
- Gain practical skills in early literacy facilitation
- Support children, teachers, and caregivers in literacy activities
- Assist with programme delivery in schools, libraries, and community spaces
- Develop confidence, leadership, and workplace skills
This model not only strengthens literacy support at community level, but also creates meaningful opportunities for youth development, skills training, and employment.

Empowering Educators for a Brighter Future

- Age-Appropriate Activities: Crafting engaging, developmentally suitable activities for young learners.
- Progress Tracking: Learning how to observe and record children’s development milestones.
- Planning and Resourcing: Mastering the art of daily program planning and resource management.
